A few of my girlfriends and I decided to take advantage of Black Owned Restaurant week happening in Harlem. This is similar to the restaurant week that happens in big cities all over the country. In which certain restaurants offer a prefix menu for a set price. Black Owned Restaurant Week offers the same deal, but you get to support Black Owned Business. The Edge was one of the restaurants participating and I must admit that a 3-course meal for $30 is hard to turn down! Check out the link here to find other restaurants that are participating.
First things first…
The Edge is a Jamaican-British restaurant located on 139th street in Harlem. I was glad to venture out to the restaurant since I rarely go past 125th street. To me, this restaurant felt like it was on the edge of Harlem, even though it’s surrounded by a few transit lines(the B and the C subway are walking distances). Aside from going to try out the restaurant week menu, The Edge also offers a decent Happy Hour that runs until 8 PM. It’s hard to find a good late happy hour spot so I’m glad I can now add The Edge to the list. They offer some great specials such as $4 wines and $6 rum punches.
Inside the restaurant, it has a very cozy feel and includes an exposed brick. For a second it made me feel like I was inside one of my girlfriends living rooms just having dinner. The restaurant is filled with paintings of famous artists, and some snapshots of Jamaican Culture. The Edge is a family owned business ran by two sisters who wanted to share their roots, and foods they ended up eating growing up. The restaurant week menu offered some of the traditional Jamaican dishes that I am familiar with such as Ackee and Cod Fish Fritters, Jerk Chicken, and infusion of coconut into their dishes.
Here is what we ordered:
House red wine
Rum punch
Ackee + Cod fish fritters + Jerk-Lime Alio
Jerk Caesar salad
Jerk Chicken pasta served in a creamy alfredo sauce
Coconut Fish Burger served with housemade tartar sauce, fried sweet plantains, and mixed greens
Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding served with rum spiced whipped cream
Everything that we ordered was d e l i c i o u s. The jerk chicken alfredo pasta, which I was expecting to be rasta pasta based on its description, ended up being linguine pasta with slices of jerk chicken. The sauce had a nice spice to it and everything was seasoned well. I was happy it wasn’t just your typical Alfredo pasta because I’m not the biggest fan of Alfredo. The spice was just enough, not overbearing and I was able to get through a decent amount. The portion of pasta was really big so I was happy to go home with some leftovers.
The fish burger was amazing, and when the waitress brought it to the table most of my group wished they ordered that instead. The fish burger was fried to golden perfection and topped with a homemade tartar sauce. My least favorite dish would have to be the cod fritters, but the Jerk-Lime Alio was divine. It had a bit too much ackee for me, but if that’s not an issue for you I’m sure you will like it.
The service was great and our waitress was very accommodating to our group. Aside from the restaurant week menu, there are definitely some other items that caught my attention such as the red snapper, and spicy shrimp with mango sauce. On my next visit, I will definitely be ordering those items.
Overall, I had a great experience at The Edge, the food was tasty, and the ambiance was great. This spot is definitely good for a date night or a gathering with friends. Make sure you make a reservation as I can see this place getting busy. I would definitely add this to your restaurant list as you won’t be disappointed. If you got a chance to check out any of the other restaurants participating in Black Owned Restaurant week, let me know your experience below!
